Waverly Wind Farm Waverly

The Waverly Wind Farm is located on cropland and pasture in east central Kansas. This complex incorporates 90 turbines rated at 2.1 MW each and 5 turbines rated at 2.0 MW each. These modern wind turbine generators are robust, sophisticated, high-tech machines designed to capture the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into electricity. Waverly Wind Farm avoids adding over 331,349 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere per year, the equivalent of removing 58,439 cars from the road. This wind farm has an installed capacity of 199 megawatts (MW) – enough to power approximately 51,306 average homes with clean energy each year.

Our team was tasked with replacing numerous existing breakers that were factory failures or manufacturing defects. In order to comply with our safety procedures we first identified all lock out points, turned off the power and tested for zero potential. Once our lock out procedure was in effect we strategically replaced numerous 34/5 KV (Sulphur Hexafluoride) SF6 breakers which were housed in the base of the WTG's (Wind Turbine Generator). Because the replacements were newer different models, modifications to the system were needed. We then were challenged with replacing fusing in the substations capacitor banks. Once our lockout procedure was again applied we then grounded all switching circuits at the sub and sectionalizer cabinets. All fuses were replaced and tested. In addition to the breaker and capacitor work, we located various services for the owner, repaired and terminated any failed cables and field tested prior to re-energization. This service and maintenance project is still ongoing and we are continuing to support this customers equipment upgrades.

Black & McDonald Photovoltaic roof top solar system - Kansas City

Green buildings being constructed today are not possible without integrated teams of architects, engineers and contractors including the facility maintenance contractor. Black & McDonald has long taken part in such integrated project delivery models, providing the key aspects of both the technical construction and facility management afterward. Decisions made during design and construction can reduce the owners' costs throughout the building's sustainable life. It was only fitting if Black & McDonald performs these tasks for clients that they should have renewable production of their own. Our solar installation although small in comparison to some of the projects will help reduce our carbon footprint.

Black & McDonald installed a 25 KW Photovoltaic roof top system at their Kansas City operations. In order to protect our current roof and warranty we had a special layer of roofing material put down. The racking materials were laid out and ballast blocking was elevated to the roof. PV panels, racking and ballasting were installed at the same time in order to secure the system from high winds. While the roof work was being done, on the ground we installed various disconnects, an Inverter and in our case a transformer to meet all the electrical requirements for our system. Once complete our final documentation was sent to the local utility (KCPL) and a special solar meter was installed. This is an important part of the process; without the correct meter you will not be able to track and/or get credit for energy production. This project was completed on time and to the owner (Black & McDonald) satisfaction. We continue to help today's business owners achieve environmental consciousness, improve operational effectiveness, and minimize facility obsolescence.

Black & McDonald's depth of experience has made us the partner of choice across a wide range of industries. To get there took time and effort.
