Black & McDonald Enables Reduced Energy Footprint for BC Children's and Women's Hospital

Black & McDonald continues to demonstrate its expertise in sustainability and energy management services with the newly constructed Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) at B.C. Children’s and Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. This new 640,000 square foot, 10-storey facility houses 241 single patient rooms, 81 out-patient beds, and new space for Emergency, Oncology, Birthing, Surgical, and many other departments, along with new clinical education and research space.

Black & McDonald is committed to reducing energy usage for its clients, and this particular facility's mechanical and electrical design is based upon equipment strategies for energy use reduction. In order to achieve the energy model for the building, high efficiency heat recovery chillers were used, as well as air-to-water heat pumps, which capture waste heat and return it for use within the building.

Building operators have access to real time operating data with energy parameters set to indicate when usage falls outside of specified ranges. This allows the operator to review and address any issues quickly, prior to any significant impact on overall energy usage. The facility design also incorporates load reduction strategies such as high efficiency LED lighting systems, and high performance walls and glazing.

Construction of the TACC was completed in July 2017. Black & McDonald has been actively involved in operational preparations since 2014 as part of a public-private partnership, and currently employs a team of 14 highly trained people to service and operate the complex mechanical and electrical building systems including 6 Building Operators/Power Engineers, 2 Electricians, 1 Maintenance Mechanic, 1 Plumber and 1 Support Systems Technician.
