Cerner - Fiber Optic conduit Installation Lee's Summity

Cerner continues to build upon the foundation of intelligent solutions for the health care industry. Their technologies connect people and systems at more than 18,000 facilities worldwide and their wide range of services support the clinical, financial, and operational needs of organizations of every size. Together with clients, they create a future where the health care system works to improve the well-being of individuals and communities. By designing leading-edge health information technology, they offer strategies that empower organizations to know, manage, and engage their populations. Applications are developed with physicians in mind so they can focus on people, not technology. These helpful tools are designed to work for today and think for tomorrow.

Black & McDonald was contracted by Cerner to install a conduit system that would house future fiber optic cables from their server room to the new call center computer room. We were permitted to work during regular hours in the occupied campus however the new call center area needed to be secure and classified as a construction zone. Once the area was secure we supplied and installed 2-4" EMT conduits as well as 2 large 3' x 3' junction points that would allow for proper radius bending of fiber optic cables as recommended by the manufacture. This pipe run had a few transitions requiring specific custom bends throughout as well as being 10' above the floor. Even though it was only 10' above the floor special considerations were taken into account while working from step ladders making sure we had 3 point contact and that the proper safety PPE was being used by our workers. Once the conduits were secure and installed we blew in drag lines to pull the future fiber optic cables. This project was completed on time, without incident, and to the customer's satisfaction.

DST - Printer Power Installation
Kansas City Print Facility

DST Systems, Inc. is a leading provider of strategic advisory, transformative technologies, and operations outsourcing to the financial and healthcare industries. Relying on deep industry knowledge, critical infrastructure, and service excellence, DST helps companies master the escalating complexity of customer, business, and regulatory requirements.

Black & McDonald was contracted by DST to install all the electrical power requirements for 3 new printing machines. These 3 Vario Stream Printers are not your average printer -these machines require multiple power sources and are of industrial grade. Our team installed 2 -1½ ' EMT conduits from a strategically placed power panels to the new location of the printers. These conduits were installed 25' in the air requiring our tradespersons to work from elevated platforms. There were various elevation transitions throughout requiring our team to make specific bends in the conduit. Once all of the conduit and fittings were installed we pulled in the electrical conductors. Due to the nature of the facility where it operates 24/7 -365 days a year, shutting down the electrical power was not an option. We were required to install new breakers in two separate panels. In order to do this installation safely and in compliance with NFPA 70 Standards, we used the proper protective Arc Flash safety gear. The particular level of flash present was provided at the panel location by the owner from a previous Arc Flash Study they had completed as per the NFPA 70 recommendations. This installation was carefully planned and executed with no incidents occurring. Once all the breakers were installed the same worker in his Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) terminated and locked out all of the breakers. Once the equipment arrived and was installed we were able to connect the 3 printers, test and energize turning over the completed installation to the owner.

This project was completed on time and to the customer's satisfaction.

Kansas City Southern LED lighting retrofit Kansas City Southern RR

The Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCS), owned by Kansas City Southern, is the third-oldest Class I railroad in North America still in operation. KCS was founded in 1887 and is currently operating in a region consisting of ten central U.S. states. KCS also owns and indirectly operates Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM) in the central and northeastern states of México, and is the only Class I Railroad to own any track both inside and outside of Mexico's boundaries. Including all trackage owned by wholly owned subsidiaries, KCS owns a total of approximately 9,600 kilometers (6,000 route miles) of track.

Black & McDonald was contracted by Kansas City Southern to retrofit a set amount of Metal Halide light fixtures. This project would fall under the Kansas City Power and Light rebate program that would result in a substantial rebate given to KC Southern because they performed upgrades on older, less efficient lights converting to a more efficient LED light. This project would include but not limited to bollard, driveway, walkway, courtyard, flag pole, building exterior and interior lobby lighting. The most unique lighting retro-fit was the exterior fixtures on the KC Southern meeting room, which is a refurbished train car used for business meetings. This project required a day by day work schedule making sure that no lights were left unlit at night. Some elevated work platforms were used to get to high locations such as the 28' Driveway pole lights. Surge suppressors were also installed to protect the LED lighting from unforeseen power surges.

This project was completed on time and to the customer's satisfaction.

Yellow Freight - Transformer Replacement World Headquarters

YRC Worldwide Inc., headquartered in Overland Park, Kan., is the holding company for a portfolio of less-than-truckload (LTL) companies including YRC Freight, YRC Reimer, Holland, Reddaway, and New Penn. Collectively, YRC Worldwide companies have one of the largest, most comprehensive LTL networks in North America with local, regional, national and international capabilities. Through their teams of experienced service professionals, YRC Worldwide companies offer industry-leading expertise in heavyweight shipments and flexible supply chain solutions, ensuring customers can ship industrial, commercial, and retail goods with confidence.

Black & McDonald was contracted by YRC World Headquarters in Kansas City to replace three medium voltage transformers. The original equipment was 30 years old, unsafe and quite corroded due to the outdoor environment of being in a pit. The input voltage was 12,470 volts and the secondary was 277,480 volt 3 phase 4 wire. The project had to be completed on a weekend, so as to not disrupt office and Data Center operations. To meet the deadline, we began on Friday by doing half of the medium voltage terminations. On Saturday, the building was rolled to generators at 6:00AM so the data center stayed up and everything was functioning normal. By 7:00 AM, we were able to turn off the power and performed
lockout /tagout from Kansas City Power & Light. We then started disconnecting the old transformers. After the transformers were disconnected we had Haggard Hauling hoist the old transformers from the pit and lowered the new transformers in place. We then pulled the medium voltage cable into the new transformers and the rest of the stress cones were installed. Once the stress cones were finished, the Eaton Corporation was brought in to test the transformers for turns ratio and acceptance testing. They also tested the cable at 64,000 volts for 15 minutes per the engineer's recommendation. Everything was successful and passed all testing. While this was going on, the secondary conductors of the transformers were being made up. Special buss flags were made by A/C Controls because we were using the existing secondary feeders. The lockout/tagouts were removed and the transformers were reenergized one at a time. Each was burnt in for 30 minutes with no load. Voltage and phase rotation passed testing and load was successfully transferred back to the utility. The building was brought back on line 2 hours ahead of schedule, and all power was fully functional for the work week to begin.

All work was completed within budget and without incident.

Boulevard Brewing Cellar 5 Brewing Line Kansas City

Boulevard Brewing Company has grown to be the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest, with full or partial distribution currently in 31 states and Washington DC. Since 1989 Boulevard Brewing Company has remained dedicated to the craft of producing fresh, flavorful beers using traditional ingredients and the best of both old and new brewing techniques. They are proud to be Kansas City's Beer.

Black & McDonald, whom Boulevard Brewing recommended for this project, was contracted by Krones, a large European OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to connect all the electrical and pneumatic requirements for the new Cellar 5 line. Krones supplied all the large equipment as well as the MCC's, control panels, cable trays, cabling and field devices. Our first responsibility was to map out and place all the field equipment as well as install the main MCC (Motor Control Center). This installation took place on the second floor where we had to hoist by crane each section through the side of the building, where our team received and maneuvered the individual sections into the mechanical room via a small door opening. Once the entire MCC was installed and connected, we ran the power and communication requirements to it. We then installed all the Stainless Steel control panels, cable tray systems and Stainless Steel protection pipes. To consolidate space, the cable tray systems would carry all of the pneumatic tubing as well as the electrical power and control cabling. To compensate for stray Eddy Currents or creating cross talk by inductive sources all of the cables were shielded. Once all the cabling and tubing were installed we began to terminate, test, and then commission the system. Once the process was proven and the job was inspected by the local electrical authority we went back and installed all the cable tray covers. This project required extensive coordination with the other trades that were present. Our team worked together with the others to help produce an efficient schedule minimizing down time. This project was completed on time, without incident and to the customer's satisfaction. We continue to support this customer's needs.

Treehouse Foods Production Line Upgrade Pasta Plant

TreeHouse Foods is a consumer packaged food and beverage manufacturer with 24 manufacturing facilities across the United States and Canada focusing primarily on private label products for both retail grocery and food-away-from-home customers. Having a comprehensive offering of packaging formats and flavor profiles, they also offer natural, organic, and preservative free ingredients in many categories. Their strategy is to be the leading supplier of private label food and beverage products by providing the best balance of quality and cost to all customers.

Black & McDonald was contracted by TreeHouse to upgrade a pasta production line in Excelsior Springs. MO. The line is "A Line" and it produces small size dry pasta. "A Line" composition is mixer, extruder, shaker, pre-dryer, dryer, cooler, and storage spanning 280'. In order for us to work on the line during regular production hours the work area was required to be isolated with a temporary plastic curtain for environmental isolation. Once the work area was secured and safety tape installed we were able to isolate all power and energy sources, tagging and locking them off. Our team then tested and verified for zero potential before disconnecting all electrical power feeds and controls to the A-Line. Side and roof panels were removed and the equipment was elevated off the floor with various rigging equipment for better access. Due to the high temperature the equipment reaches during production, and after years of use some of the internal cabling and control devices needed to be replaced. The cables and devices were removed, new ones installed and re-terminated. The existing shaker was removed and an upgraded energy efficient new shaker was installed. All pneumatic motion controls were removed and upgraded to electronic controls. New oil system and fans were added to the dryers consisting of motors, disconnects, and control devices. PLC's upgrades and control wiring modifications were made in the main control panel. Our onsite supervision worked directly with the owner for visual inspections of all work to be completed prior to power up. Once we verified that all systems were ready and other trades locks were removed, we removed our locks and powered up the line. We then worked with equipment engineers and the owner for line startup and commissioning. This process includes all motors checked for rotation, mechanical movement in sync, and I/O checkout. This project had zero deficiencies. This type of project is not new for Black & McDonald, we have completed numerous rebuilds and upgrades for this customer over the years.

This project was completed on time and to the customer's satisfaction. We continue to service this customer's day to day activity.

Bayer Building Addition—
New Oxidation Building

One goal of Bayer Crop Science is to be able to produce enough food, feed, fiber and renewable raw materials for a growing world population on the limited land available. Bayer has businesses in crop protection, seeds and non-agricultural applications. The applicability of Fenton's Oxidation is to improve the biodegradability of a pharmaceutical wastewater by being treated biologically.

Black & McDonald was contracted by Bayer to complete all the electrical requirements for the new Fenton Oxidation building addition and process line. Our team supplied and installed a new 13,800 volt line that would travel across a horizontal cable tray system from the main building to an outside step down transformer located near the building addition. We used a bus duct system to enter the transformed 480 volt power into the building that would terminate in the new main distribution equipment. In case of a power failure a Uninterrupted Power Service (UPS) was installed to minimize the lost down time damage. Our team strategically placed lighting/power panels and transformers throughout the new building addition that would supply power to all the various building systems. A new Honeywell addressable fire alarm system was installed and we connected it to the existing system located in the main complex. We supplied and installed all the cable requirements for the various Motor Control Centers (MCC) that would power and control the Fenton Oxidation process line. We used a variety of methods to distribute the power and control cables through cable tray systems and Galvanized Rigid Conduit (GRC) drops. Once all the main power and branch systems were installed with the cabling coiled up, we stepped aside so the equipment installers could physically place all the process line components consisting of storage tanks, agitators, conveyance, etc. Once the equipment was set, we connected our power and control cables to the equipment as it became available. This process line had an elaborate Siemens control system installed that could talk logically throughout the line. Fiber optic and structured cabling was also installed to support all communications. Once all systems were terminated and tested, we supported Bayer on their commissioning efforts. Because this was a new building and process installation Kansas City requires a full electrical inspection be performed. We did so with 0 deficiencies. This project was performed during regular work hours. Special scheduling and coordination was needed for all the various trade groups on this project. The project coordination team, Bayer, did a good job helping us to complete this project without incident and to the customer's satisfaction.

Camp Branch Marina Electrical System Restoration Camp Branch Marina

Smithville Lake is a 7,200 acre lake and has more than 175 miles of shoreline. Located just 20 miles from downtown Kansas City, there are several recreational opportunities available to the outdoor enthusiast that include beaches, campsites, shelters, marinas including boat rentals, restaurants, golf courses, fishing, walking/biking trails, and an aggressive 2,300 acre native grassland revitalization project.

Black & McDonald was contracted by Camp Branch Marina to make repairs to the dock electrical system that was destroyed during a violent storm. The dock with the Main Electrical Service was ripped away damaging the main feeder panel and secondary distribution conductors. In this particular case the main feeder, which was previously installed by us, was underwater rated marine cable and ran under the water on the ground out to the docks. The main feeder, interior bus, and breaker components were all that were left and salvageable electrically speaking. Due to new code changes for marine applications we installed a new primary 600 amp GFCI panel that would feed the entire dock system. Once the physical dock was re-installed we were able to install the main feeder cable back into a new junction point located on the main dock structure which was connected to a new 600 amp distribution panel. We then installed new cabling, which was a miner's rated cable, through the removable panel under floor system located on the various docks. We were able to reuse the existing electrical sub panels that were strategically located throughout the dock system. These secondary panels ranged from 60 to 200 amps. The salvaged interior bus and breaker components were then installed and all cabling was terminated. Prior to energizing, Black & McDonald tested all cable systems. The power supply system was re-energized and put back into service. This project was unique in that it fell under the Marine section of the National Electrical Code which is not commonly used by most contractors. We completed this project on time and to the customer's satisfaction.

University of Kansas Edwards Campus Drain Pan Installation
University of Kansas Edwards Campus

The University of Kansas was founded in 1864 and opened in 1866. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs in a wide variety of fields with enrollment exceeding 27,000 at several campuses. The Edwards Campus sits on 30 acres of land and consists of multiple buildings completed in 2005 and expanded in 2012.

Black & McDonald was contracted by the University of Kansas to assist in a Design Build solution to a water problem that was occurring in one of their 480/277 volt electrical distribution panels located 2 stories underground. In this particular case the main feeder, previously installed in PVC conduit, ran outside the building extending downward into the ground, then transitioning underneath the 1st lower level concrete slab, turning downward again for 10 feet before entering the 2nd lower level electrical room. The distribution equipment was mounted tight to the exterior wall. These feeders entered the lower section of the electrical distribution equipment and the PVC pipes were cut flush with the lower level wall. Over time and during heavy rains these conduits would accumulate not only with condensation but rain water dripping into the lower section of the distribution equipment creating a safety hazard. Due to the nature of the feeder installation and how we could not access it without a lot of difficulty and cost, we suggested a solution that was fairly simple in design but practical in principal. We fabricated and installed a Stainless Steel gutter like unit located directly under the feeder entrance point collecting any loose water. The accumulated water would then transfer to a custom stainless steel drain pan located in the base of the gear draining out to a floor drain. The custom gutter and drain design were approved by Smith & Boucher Engineering prior to fabrication and installation. In order to install the drain equipment and not interfere with the day to day operations of the campus we were required to work off hours. Our team came in late Friday night, de-energized, safely locked off all energy potential sources and worked continuous until complete early Saturday morning. Once complete all energy sources were re-energized. This unique solution will achieve the water mitigation problem at the same time as eliminate any safety hazards.

We completed this project on time and to the customer's satisfaction.
