Health Care

Black & McDonald understands the challenges of working within the mission-critical environments of healthcare through extensive new construction, renovation and maintenance experience in countless facilities across Canada. Personnel are trained for Infection Control procedures when working in operational areas to reduce risk to healthcare facility staff, patients, and their families, visitors, and support services. Special care is also taken to minimize, or eliminate when possible, disruptions within the facility during shut-downs or tie-ins of new to existing systems. At Black & McDonald, health and safety remain always top of mind. Our motto is "No one gets hurt today or tomorrow".

Hamilton Health Sciences - Emergency Eyewash Upgrades, Phase I

Hamilton Health Sciences is a family of seven unique hospitals, a cancer centre, and an urgent care centre. Hamilton Health Sciences wanted to ensure that all emergency eyewash (EEW) stations across its many sites were in line with ANSI code requirements.

Black & McDonald’s scope of work included the installation of mixing valves at all emergency eyewash stations across most Hamilton Health Sciences sites. As the Mechanical Prime contractor for the project, we upgraded the existing EEW stations to tepid water.

Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals Project

The Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals Project (KVHP)is an example of a successful Design - Build - Finance - Maintain projects that Black & McDonald has accomplished. As a key member of the Infusion Health consortium, the private sector partner for the KVHP, Black & McDonald's is the Facility Management & Operations (FMO) provider for the existing and new buildings across both hospital campuses.

Besides the traditional hard and soft FM, Black & McDonald also provides special services to KVHP in such areas as construction and project management, energy management/audits, environmental protection, maintenance of lab exhaust and medical gases, and LEED studies and implementation.

Throughout the stages of the project, Black & McDonald FM Team’s participation in key committees and work groups provided a forum for stakeholders to resolve issues and challenges in real time, thus mitigating delays, overruns, and future problems.

Our work at KVHP demonstrates not only our commitment to achieving deliverables on time and under budget but also our ability to work successfully within the medical research community during all stages of design, construction, and operations.

McMaster University Medical Centre - Emergency Generator Installation

Located next to McMaster University in west Hamilton, McMaster University Medical Centre opened in 1972 as a state-of-the-art healthcare facility and has been meeting the changing healthcare needs of the community ever since.

The facility lost all existing emergency generator power in 2014 during a winter blizzard. Black & McDonald was awarded a contract to install two new diesel powered 1600 kVA generators to be installed on the existing 5th floor roof. The scope of work included the structural, mechanical, electrical, and hoisting of the new generators, including reinforcing all existing roof trusses in the asbestos coated interstitial spaces. The four month project culminated with the hoisting of two 60 ton generators at a 120’ radius using the largest mobile crane in Canada.

Women's College Hospital - Redevelopment Project

The Women's College Hospital (WCH) project involved the Design-Build-Finance-Maintain construction of a new 639,000 sq. ft. medical tower by an integrated team of contractors and consultants. Black & McDonald was accountable for three distinct areas of responsibility: Maintainability Consultation during the design stage, Electrical, Mechanical and Network systems installation during construction, and Facility Management & Operations (FMO) for the 30-year concession.

The mechanical team provided complete HVAC, plumbing, and medical specialty systems. The electrical team provided, on a turnkey basis, equipment and services including design, project management, and project commissioning services.

The FMO scope, in addition to the traditional hard and soft FM services,  includes FM services for specialized hospital systems, e.g. lab exhaust systems, medical gases, lab vacuum system, clean steam production for sterilization, water purification systems, and waste systems. Other services include central dispatch, security services and systems, parking, fire and contingency planning, and maintenance of rolling stock. The FMO team implemented a comprehensive assessment including a complete energy audit of the facility to assess building system performance and identify areas for building and process improvements.

Black & McDonald is committed to excellence in service and customer care and continues to reach or exceed the operational standards at WCH.
