Aeroplan Offices

Vancouver, BC

For Aeroplan's 46,000 sq. ft. office renovation, Black & McDonald supplied and installed their new rooftop HVAC equipment complete with sheet metal ductwork and air balancing. New plumbing work for multiple washroom groups and upgrades to the DDC system programming were also added, all completed on-time within the 8 week schedule.

Air Canada Data Centre

Manitoba

Mechanical, electrical, structural and civil trades were utilized by Black & McDonald to upgrade the emergency and uninterruptible power systems (UPS) for the data centre. Two 2,000 kW diesel generators were installed to replace 4 old ones, upgrades were done to the ventilation for the generators, and a temporary generator was used to ensure full independent redundancy emergency power was available throughout construction. Intense pre-planning was required for several critical tie-in procedures to ensure the safety of staff and prevent the compromise of the critical systems and operations.

Calgary Int'l Airport Baggage
Handling System

Calgary, AB

Black & McDonald undertook this project which consisted of the off-loading, layout, assembly and installation of baggage handling conveyors, and associated equipment, including the removal, modification, and reinstallation of selected existing components & systems.

DHL Express

Burnaby, BC

To free space for DHL's warehouse by removing an old internal block wall office, Black & McDonald had to restructure the supports for the roof and relocate numerous electrical panels and conveyor control systems, all while maintaining operations. Over 100 electrical circuits had to be identified, replacement panels constructed and the new upgraded electrical service installed. Only powering down on one weekend, the project was completed within the tight 3-week window set by DHL.

Hamilton Street Railroad

To supply and install a dust collector for the brake drum machining units, Black & McDonald utilized their sheet metal, electrical and plumbing trades to design a complete system including wiring, controls, air links, and equipment.

Kelowna International Airport

Kelowna, BC

Facility Maintenance and Operations at the airport are managed and supervised by Black & McDonald's on-site contract manager. Labour, supervision, tools, materials and equipment necessary are provided to maintain and repair the following functions: airside and terminal electrical systems, FIDS/BIDS, Tower & FSS touch screen PLC airfield lighting control system, runway, taxiway, and approach lighting, airport hazard & rotating beacons, all mechanical systems including HVAC, janitorial services, ground side snow & ice control, conveyors, carousels, and baggage systems.

Montreal Trudeau Int'l
Airport Expansion

Montreal, QC

As part of the new extension, Black & McDonald constructed a new boarding area including two access ramps, new ticket counters and boutiques, electrical room modifications, additional electrical and telecommunication rooms and the feeding of a cooling tower system. The high security level demanded very specific planning and coordination.

NAV Canada

To meet today's standards for the administration and classroom areas, and to permit the future expansion of the building's critical system loads Black & McDonald installed a combination of reciprocating chillers, air-cooled condensers, dry-coolers, rooftop units and a UPS. The project required a tight safety and coordination plan to complete in and around NAV Canada's ongoing air traffic control operations.

OC Transpo

Ottawa, ON

As general contractor for the City of Ottawa's Countdown Upgrade project, Black & Mcdonald added a second service bay for buses and a new garage heating/ventilation system, new electrical and emergency power service, upgraded lighting system, new fuel and fluids dispensing systems, and vacuum and bus washing systems.

Pearson Int'l Airport –
Common Cabling Systems

Mississauga, ON

Under this contract Black & McDonald Limited was responsible for the installation of the complete structured cabling system (voice & data), certified to Category 6 Standards, within the new Terminal 1. The construction involved installation of primary and diverse fibre optic and copper backbone cabling between 3 main communication rooms to a total of 47 telecommunication closets (TCs) and 15,000 horizontal drops from the TCs.

Pearson Int'l Airport –
Vehicle Tunnel

Mississauga, ON

Black and McDonald performed all electrical, communication, utility, mechanical, and sheet metal work associated with a 550 meter long four-lane vehicle tunnel and a utility corridor parallel to the tunnel that required open cut excavation across 3 taxiways and one runway. Challenges involved detailed scheduling, staging and security to enable the safe operation of the airport during construction.

Ryder Logistics

Working with Intercon Security, Black & McDonald installed the security upgrade to the Ryder Logistics Calgary Warehouse. Scope of security upgrade included surveillance cameras, intrusion detection, access control, intercom, power and fire alarm requirements.

Sheppard Subway

Black & McDonald supplied and installed the traction power cables, 1500mcm, 535mcm and 5Kv power cables, the isolation switches and D/C tie breakers, and connections of positive and negative rail, compression and cadwelds for the Sheppard Subway.

Transformer Replacement

Toronto, ON

To replace an existing damaged transformer at the Prince Edward substation, Black & McDonald had to remove the building roof for access. Supply and installation of the new 750Kva 27.6Kv / 4.16Kv cast coil transformer was done complete with transformer testing.

Voest-Alpine Ship Loaders

Halifax, NS

For the manufacturer Fundy Gypsum Company's Hantsport Facility, mechanical and electrical work was done for assembly of 2 ship loaders (approx 330 ton each). Challenges included building the crane pad to support the crane lifting the loads on a temporary pivot point, and then later moving the loaders to their final location after the modifications.
