K+S Potash Legacy Project - Central Heating Skids 300

The Legacy Project potash mine and production facility is the first new greenfield potash mine built in Saskatchewan in nearly forty years, located near the communities of Bethune and Findlater. Legacy mine is a solution potash mine.

Black & McDonald was awarded a contract to design, fabricate, and test three central heating skids for the K+S Legacy project. Black & McDonald partnered with equipment supplier, HVAC Sales, to design, fabricate, coat, and test three central heating skids. Each package contained a custom steam to glycol shell & tube heat exchanger, two glycol recirculating pumps, two suction diffusers, one condensate recovery unit, temperature and pressure sensors/gauges, and all interconnecting piping mounted on custom self-contained structural steel bases. Due to the size of the building openings, these skids were fabricated in two pieces and reassembled on site. All piping was designed, fabricated, and tested under B31.3 and coated to meet K+S stringent specifications. The skid dimensions were 19' L x 19' W x 10' H and the shipping weight was 41,800 lb.

Cameco Calciner Cooling Duct

For over a quarter century, Cameco has been safely and reliably producing uranium and nuclear fuel products to generate electricity at the world's nuclear reactors. The title of world's largest uranium producer belongs to the McArthur River-Key Lake tandem operation located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Cameco operates both ISO 14001 certified locations, which have been in production since 1999 and 1983 respectively. Since McArthur River production began, these operations have reliably produced more than 291 million lb using mining methods best suited for the ground conditions.

Black & McDonald's Cad Team converted an existing 3D model into fabrication and installation drawing, utilizing Trimble Duct Designer. Due to the remote location, the client was looking for minimal field connections, so our cad team designed the spool pieces to meet the owner's request. Complicating the fabrication was the large diameter of the pipe as it ranged from 48" round to 24" round. Duct supports were fabricated and mounted to the duct spools prior to shipping. The duct was fabricated from 14 ga 316 SS in accordance to SMACNA Industrial Duct Standards. The ducting is used to provide cooling to an area of the mill were the ore is baked in a kiln (Calciner). Due to the environment of this area, high heat and the possibility of radiation exposure, the duct is 100% seal welded and was subject to LPI (Liquid Penetrant Inspection) testing.

Cameco Condenser Support Buildings

Cigar Lake is the world's second largest high-grade uranium deposit, with grades that are 100 times the world's avearage.

Black & McDonald was awarded a contract to design, fabricate, and test five condenser support buildings for the Cameco Cigar Lake Mine site. Using 3D modelling software, Black & McDonald designed the structural steel, condenser water tanks, and interconnecting piping and supports for this project. Each module assembly consisted of stainless steel base stubs, steels framing (columns, beams, girts, purlins, bracing, etc.) for the enclosures, penetration framing, louver, momorail, floor checker plate, roof and insulated wall cladding, double door, access platform c/w handrail and ladder, knee bracing supports for piping and cable trays, insulation (interior below roof and below checker plate floor), E/I panels supports and installation of customer supplied water circulation pumpps, electrical panels and PLC cabinets, analog, and discrete junction boxes, and instruments. Black & McDonald was able to deliver these buildings on time and on budget by utilizing out own highly skilled trade professionals.

PCL Industrial Management Inc - Agrium Vault Dust Collection

This facility is a Potash Mine located in Saskatchewan.

Black & McDonald was contracted to complete the fabrication and installation of the dust collection system on the Agrium Vault Expansion Project. The installation included approximately 2000 ft. of pipe ranging in sizes from 3" to 72" diameter, 3/8" to 14 gauge thick material, welded and flanged connections in both mild steel and stainless steel. Black & McDonald supplied and installed all supports, including fixed and welded types. All demolition of existing system, hoisting, rigging, fitting and welding was completed in house by Black & McDonald field staff. At the peak of the project the crew included a project manager, a superintendent, a field coordinator, 4 foremen and 30 plus field staff. The crews worked on 4 shifts (2 night and 2 day) running a 14 on 7 off shift overlapped to ensure the site had coverage for the duration of the project which ran from June 2014 to May of 2015. Black & McDonald assisted in the balancing and commissioning of the system.
